The Volcano Eyes platform is a unique blend of local, traditional, and contemporary design elements. The design was inspired by the Turkish crescent symbol, a national emblem that can only be interpreted according to strict editing rules. The observation point's form is connected to the abstract mass of the volcano and its geological sight, creating a harmonious blend of natural and man-made elements.
The platform's unique properties lie in its function as an observation point. It offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the Nemrut Volcano's caldera, one of the largest crater lakes in the world. The design was an entry for the Nemrut Volcano Eyes competition, showcasing the team's innovative approach to design and architecture.
The platform was created using environmentally responsible and cost-effective materials. The primary structure is made of steel, which can be easily transported to the terrain in small and lightweight elements. The secondary frame of the structure, the wire mesh, also serves as a formwork, similar to a gabion wall. The construction process requires minimal energy and tools, emphasizing the project's commitment to environmental responsibility.
The observation point's monolithic geometry creates space, mass, and generous details simultaneously. The mass openings, formed along the regular arches, are centrally rotated in relation to each other, enabling a panoramic view on different levels of the lookout point. The openings control the traffic system of the lookout point and increase the duality between static and dynamic.
The design team faced several challenges during the project, including understanding Turkish culture and its unique motifs. The team examined traditional Turkish symbols like the hamsa, crescent, tulip, rose, nazar, and pomegranate, finding many similarities between Hungarian and Turkish traditions. The design had to appear as a national artwork procreating contemporary concept in high standard, a challenge that the team successfully overcame.
The Volcano Eyes project was awarded Silver in the A' Architecture, Building, and Structure Design Award in 2019. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The design, admired for its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcases a remarkable level of excellence and introduces positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
